Instructor Spotlight: Roger

Question:   Tell me about yourself.
Answer:  I am from Huntington Beach, CA. I came to Milwaukee to coach at the Milwaukee Rowing Club where I am now the Director of the Junior program. Running the rowing program and equipment maintenance keep me busy when I am not at SPIRE. 

Question:   Did you compete in any sports?
Answer: I have been involved in sports since I was a kid. In high school, I played basketball, baseball, and volleyball. At UW-Madison, I turned to the sport of rowing and had a phenomenal experience competing among the best teams in the country. Since graduating I have continued with some rowing to keep my fitness. I have also picked up cross-country skiing and I have competed in the Birkie (50k race) twice.

 Question:   What made you decide to become an instructor?
Answer: In coaching rowing for the past five years, I have found that I have a passion for inspiring others to achieve their fitness goals. I was looking into becoming a personal trainer when SPIRE came about. It was a perfect fit for me.  

Question:   What makes your class different from others?
Answer: I feel that I am able to give good insight into the technique and relating it to rowing on the water given my background. My class structure is also ever evolving. I look to switch up my intervals over time so I can keep clients on their toes.

Question:   What does your personal fitness program include?
Answer:  My personal fitness program includes rowing, weight lifting, running, and cross-country skiing. I also like to get involved in volleyball and basketball leagues when I find the time.

Question:   Favorite post workout meal?
Answer:  Chipotle. There is nothing like a Chipotle burrito.

Question:   What’s the one thing most people don’t know about you?
Answer: Most people do not know that surfing is one of my favorite things to do. Growing up in California, I would be at the beach whenever I had free time. 

Question:   Do you have a motto?
Answer:  Carpe diem 

Question:   What’s your favorite drink?
Answer:  Water. It’s the best! 

Question:   What is your favorite book? Movie?
Answer: My favorite movie is Dumb and Dumber. It is my kind of humor. I find myself quoting this movie all the time. 

Question:   What inspires you?
Answer: People do. I find myself inspired by many different people especially those who are not given much and make something out of it. 

Question:   What is in your refrigerator right now?
Answer:  It is pretty empty at the moment. Organic milk, apples and eggs. 

Question:   If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do?
Answer:  Travel. I really want to see the world.

Question:   What is your favorite song to get pumped up?
Answer: Electronic music of all types.
