Tell us a little bit about yourself— where are you from and what brought you to Milwaukee?
I am 39 years old and a single mother of a 16 year old daughter. I work for the Milwaukee Public Schools as a special education teaching assistant.
Who or what got you to join SPIRE?
I joined SPIRE through word of mouth. I was a member of another small gym that closed due to the owner relocating and she had previously mentioned to her clients to look into SPIRE. I've been here ever since!
Being a mother, how do you manage your workout routine?
Since my child is older, it's a little easier for me to work out when I want. I usually work out right after work. I have dinner ready before my daughter gets home, so she heats it up after school. I get my workout in and then I get to be home with her after I'm done working out.
What’s a guilty pleasure of yours?
Snacking is my guilty pleasure!
What is your favorite class to take at SPIRE and why?
I don't have a favorite; I like them all. They are all challenging in their own way. I push myself in them because I want to reach a high level of physical fitness one day.
What has kept you coming back to SPIRE?
I keep coming to SPIRE because I think the instructors are great. They are dedicated and they push you. On top of that, SPIRE is right off the bus line and close to my work which makes getting there very convenient for me.
Your friend is interested in joining SPIRE, what is some advice you would give him or Her?
I would tell my friend not to be intimidated. To simply pay attention to the instructor and their own workout.
What do you do after a long week?
I try to do something for myself. I treat myself to something nice like lunch or dinner.
Tell us a unique or fun fact about yourself!
I am a poet!
What has been your greatest accomplishment in life thus far?
Raising my child all by myself has been my greatest accomplishment. It's been, for me, the ultimate challenge as well as learning experience. She's not an adult just yet, so I still have some more teaching and guiding to do.
Has fitness always been a passion for you or is it relatively new?
I have always tried to stay active in my adult years. I do enjoy working out because it has many benefits. Working out for me is more mental than physical. It's an outlet for any stress or frustration I may be experiencing.
What goals has SPIRE helped you achieve?
SPIRE has continued to help me push myself and maintain my self-confidence.
What is your favorite post-workout snack or meal?
Watermelon, yogurt, or a banana!
What keeps you inSPIREd?
My daughter. As her mother, I know I am her first teacher. I never want her to feel like she can't accomplish things. I tell her that she can do whatever she puts her mind to- the strong don't quit.
